For years we’ve debated changing the name of our company FunQuilts. The name was chosen hastily in 1999 and our business has changed significantly since then. Choosing a name is hard, especially when there are two people involved. Using both of our last names sounded like a law firm while using both of our first names sounded like a sports bar. Amazingly, part of the problem with FunQuilts is that our emails often get caught in spam filters because of the word “Fun.” We never imagined that problem in 1999.
The primary reason for the change, however, is that ever since our second book Modern Quilt Workshop was published in 2005, the words “modern” and “quilts” have been used to describe our work. So we felt that it was time to embrace it as the name of our company. We’re about to move our home and studio (in December), launch a new website and e-commerce store (after the move) and start several new ventures so the timing seemed right for the name change as well.
It will take some time, even with a small company like ours for us to switch over the website, our business cards, logos on patterns and kits and yes, to break our 12-year-old habit of answering the phone, “Good Morning. FunQuilts.” So please bear with us during this transition. The name of this blog will remain the same but there will be a new Facebook page and a new url in due time. You’ll start to see our new name on the cover of our upcoming book “Transparency Quilts,” out in December as well as some other projects that I’ll announce here next week before we head to Fall Quilt Market in Houston. Our accountant wants us to finish out the year as FunQuilts so you’ll still see the name on credit card receipts and such but January the transition should be complete.
Here’s to fresh starts!
Stay tuned. We may have changed our name but there will always be more “Fun” to be had.
I love the new name. I also love your blocks in Modern Blocks: 99 Quilt Blocks from Your Favorite Designers, which just arrived on my doorstep this week.
Perfect! It must be a challenge, bigger than changing one’s name after marriage even, but I know you’re up for it. I’m laying bets on your next announcement … anyone want to pony up?
What an exciting adventure! The name is perfect for you! I look forward to all the new changes. If there is anything that I could do to help, just ask.
Wonderful name choice! I’m looking forward to seeing how the name changes things. Yay for new beginnings!
Perfect name choice! Best of luck with all the transitioning and the move!
Aw makes me a little sad to see the FunQuilts name go, but change is always hard…the new name does suit you guys so I guess your fans will just go with the flow!
Congratulations! Your new logo is beautifully clear in showing who you and Bill are and what your business stands for. All the best to you during your big transitions!
I must sound really doolally but can you tell me if I’ve taken out a subscription to your magazine because if I haven’t I would like to. I’m in the UK.

Wow….what an amazing quilt team! My friend and I had the privilege of meeting you at the AQS in GR on Wed but sadly, we were too “brain- dead” to think about buying anything else. It wasn’t until I got home today and reviewed things that I found your card and sat down (if you remember a woman who wanted to stand on your cushy floor for a 1/2 hr. break– about 4:00? That was me!) and scanned your site, your blog, and now your fb page! What amazing, beautiful quilts and fabrics! Keep up the great work!! I will be back to buy a kit or 2 as soon as I “hide” all my purchases from the quiltfest!!
