Coming Soon: Quilts Made Modern!

design, inspiration, quilting

We began working on our next book in the fall of 2008. In many ways it was a lifetime ago. At long last I’m allowed to write a little bit about it and show you an image. The book will be released in November by C&T but Amazon is already taking pre-orders for it!

It’s a big book. It’s 160 pages of quilting A to Z. There are 10 never-before-seen patterns using a wide variety of techniques. In addition to pieced quilts, we show you how to tackle hand applique as well as machine applique. There are designs for solids as well as those for large-scale prints. We still design with some tone-on-tones in mind as we did in Modern Quilt Workshop but there are also hand dyes and wovens in the book. I spent eight months hand-quilting one of the quilts because we wanted to show you a modern twist on quilting by hand. There’s even a modern take on reproduction feedsack prints.

We are so proud of this book and will be showing sneak peeks of the quilts in the book in the months leading up to the release, but know that Bill and I auditioned dozens and dozens of designs trying to come up with quilts that were unlike those you have seen in other books.

I also want to say a word about the photography. We felt that it was important for the images to create an ambiance for the collection of quilts so we hired a commercial photographer to do styled shots of each of the quilts. To show the reader the crossover appeal to these designs,  we shot the quilts in three different homes. Our hope is that these images will show you the timelessness of these designs and how great they’d look at your place. These 10 quilts look equally at home in our 1914 bungalow, a modern loft and a 1920s apartment.

Although Amazon is happy to take your money now, we would prefer to wait until the books actually arrive. We’ll be shipping out signed copies in November.

I can’t wait to show you more but wanted to share with you at least the cover for now. I’ll also be blogging in the months to come about the process of making each quilt and why we made the choices we did. Don’t touch that dial…

  1. I cannot wait for November! Thank you so much for the sneak peaks–looking forward to more. LOVE the cover!

  2. I cannot wait either! I don’t buy too many books but yours will be a definite must. Thanks for giving us a peek at what is to come.

  3. Congratulations! If the cover is any indication of the contents, this book is going to be just terrific. I was tempted to preorder on amazon (or at least put it on my wish list as a gift idea), but I think I’ll hold out for a signed copy.

Looking forward to reading more about your process in the next several months!

  4. What a gorgeous cover and quilt. I kind of want to move into that picture right now!

I can’t wait until October. Your Plain Spoken quilt is the first quilt that inspired me to try out quilting and I learned the basics for my first quilt through MQW. I can’t wait to see more previews of the book.

  5. This is the news I’ve been waiting for! My copy of MQW is so well loved and I cannot wait to get a glimpse of the newest book.

Did you ever imagine, back in the Fall of 2008, that “modern quilting” would be popping up everywhere- magazines, all of the new guilds, flickr, etc? Well timed!!

All the best to you- congrats on getting to show off your hard work!

  6. Congratulations, Weeks and Bill! The book looks fabulous. Your quilts are always gorgeous and it must be very gratifying to see all of your hard work in print!

  7. It would be nice if we didn’t HAVE to see EVERY comment on every one of yours posts showing up on the feed for theblogspot.com. Could you look into this please?

  8. @ Dena

You can subscribe to “All Posts” on the right hand side of the home page. This is separate from “All Comments.” If you’ve subscribed to “All Posts” only, you shouldn’t have to see all the comments.

  9. Sorry to leave these messages here but don’t know how to get in touch any other way. The “feed” I am seeing your comments come through on is via The Ultimate Quilting Blog at http://www.thequiltingblog.com They post feeds from other blogs daily. I was never subscribed directly to get your posts. It is only on that site that I constantly see not only your posts but all of the comments as well in their daily feed. Perhaps you can look into this?

  10. Gasp! Hi, Weeks! I’m very much looking forward to your next book. Bill may have told you that I saw him at the ICFF. It was fun to see him and I’m so happy to hear things are going well. Congrats on the book. The cover looks amazing. I can’t wait to see inside!

  11. lovely big congratulations. I know how much you have agonised over this book and the designs and cannot wait to see it. The cover looks amazing.

    hugs and kisses
    Kathreen

  12. What a novel idea to photograph your quilts in different settings. What I love about your patterns: so empirical, and so visual. I’m excited to see this new book!
