As fabric designers and quilt makers we have a seemingly endless stash of fabric so we decided to make for Christmas gifts lots of bags for the tweens, teens and women in our lives. One of our favorite patterns is a free download from the wonderful folks at American Patchwork & Quilting Magazine.
The pattern suggests using batting with lightweight quilting fabric. We used corduroy, lightweight upholstery fabric, and wools so we didn’t need the batting. These bags were so fast that each one took only an hour or so to whip up and it’s even faster if you’ve got an assembly line going. Our 12-year-old cousin pronounced them perfect for sleepovers although I was thinking more farmers’ market.

I’ve made these type bags (using a pattern called the Japanese Knot Bag) and they are ever so useful for any number of reasons. One version I made is for my letterboxing kit and I embroidered a mermaid and waves around the outside. I love these bags!
Great idea for farmers market. I am going to make some to keep ready for harvesting my vegetables and I have the perfect fabric for it too! Thanks for the inspiration.
Wonderful idea, I like the way you can hook them (knot them) at the top and keep things from spilling out. Gina from Quilter’s Buzz sent me over, great blog, I’ve bookmarked a couple of inspirations already.
I’m glad to see that you have a blog. I enjoyed your segment on The Quilt Show and articles in quilt magazines. Now I can keep up to date with your blog. Thanks.
I’m so happy to learn that you have a blog! Read about it on Quilter’s Buzz and have passed the link along to quilty friends. Thanks for the inspiration!
Do you have a pattern for the grab bag?
What a great bag going to make a few. Also post your link on my blog for others to see them monday!
Thank you so much!
Thanks so much for this pattern share. I had another pattern for this kind of bag but was much more smaller and this one is just the perfect fit!
Thanks!
your bags are beautiful, but are they for sale and whats the cost?
I made this bag, but I did something terribly wrong. Everything was going fine until the last two steps… when it came to turning the bag after sewing the two pieces together, it all went sort of pear shaped. I unpicked the whole thing and re-started from halfway through, only to get the same result… I obviously stitched the bag together in the wrong way because I was unable to make it “reversible” — instead, it was just… wrong. It’s a lovely bag!! I might try again, but I’m afraid of ruining another good fat quarter…
